"Change in Routine" Article
I found this new article. It's a few days old but it's still pretty good.

------------------------------------------------

As an Olympic gold medalist, Carly Patterson is still in high demand but she's finally enjoying life as a regular teenager as she contemplates the future.

By KEITH NIEBUHR, Times Staff Writer
Published June 1, 2005

TAMPA - Carly Patterson stood on the medal stand as the gymnastics all-around champion at last year's Olympic Games in Athens with a gold medal around her neck, a laurel on her head and a smile across her face. As the United States flag went up and the Star-Spangled Banner played, she tried her best to soak it in.

The Athens effort made her famous.

She became the sport's undisputed darling. Ford gave her a new Mustang. Jay Leno and David Letterman secured her as a guest. She was picked to appear on the Wheaties box. She landed her own leotard line.

"It was more than I thought," Patterson said last week at a promotional appearance at Stars Athletics gym.

The Olympic performance, which also included two silver medals (beam, team), signaled the end of one chapter in Patterson's life and the start of another. At 16, she became the first American woman to win the all-around since 1984, but the success presented an interesting challenge. After all, what does one do with her life after she achieves everything she ever wanted - and at such a young age.

Nine months later and now 17, the engaging and well-spoken Patterson, who resides in Allen, Texas, has stepped back a bit from the competitive realm. And for the first time, she is living more like a regular teenager.

The rising high school senior is thinking about college, has made more friends outside the gym and recently recorded a few songs with hopes of launching a singing career. She even has given thought to the idea of becoming a coach.

"After such success Carly was basically swept from her feet by a lot of stuff," said Yevgeny Marchenko, Patterson's longtime coach at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy. "The Olympics took a lot of toll, physically and mentally."

Patterson's medals were the fruition of 10 years on the mat. She began training when she was 61/2 and has produced a resume so distinguished that even had she not won gold, she still would be considered one of the sport's best.

Everything in life was shaped by gymnastics, from her school to her social life. She essentially had "no life" as the sport consumed her, but she insists, "I don't feel like I missed any of my childhood. I did it for so long, it was all I knew. And anyway, I loved it. That was what I wanted to do and that's my choice. I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Make no mistake, though, the road to the top took work. Not to mention drive.

"From the very beginning, I saw the potential," Marchenko said. "She was the most determined girl in the gym and she really took direction well. She would never give up. She was so focused on her sport."

The focus isn't entirely gone.

Patterson still practices under Marchenko's watchful eyes (a recent back injury cost her a few months), but now is in the gym only once a day so she can stay in shape primarily for tours. A decision on whether to shoot for the 2008 Olympics likely will be made within the next year, she said, and what Patterson will do is anyone's guess.

"Not having any life again, that seems hard," Patterson confessed.

Though Marchenko said he doesn't doubt Patterson could return and be successful, he noted, "Look at gymnastics history ... it's very hard after success to motivate yourself again."

For now, Patterson seems to be enjoying life as a celebrity. At Stars Athletics, more than 100 children, mostly young girls, waited in line holding posters and other items so Patterson could autograph them. She glady obliged, then took questions from and showed off some moves.

"I've seen her all the time," said 4-year-old Logan Richardson of Tampa, who wore a shirt with a photo of Patterson on it.

The trip to Tampa is one of many Patterson has made in recent weeks. She has traveled to Indianapolis, San Francisco and Pennsylvania, too. As an Olympic champion, she still is in high demand, and though it has been a bit overwhelming, the routine hasn't gotten old just yet. The fame is one of the things that pushed her to the medal stand.

"Everybody is always very positive and nice, and they seem excited to see me," Patterson said. "It's a good feeling to know you're wanted. I feel like I've achieved everything I wanted to."

Indy 500 Wrap-Up
The Indy 500 wrapped up last weekend. Because of that, a few new Carly things have released. Including two pictures and a quote. They are below.

“I’ve never been to a race or seen anything like this before. This was really cool. I’m already getting offers for the upcoming gig in Dallas. It was really exciting to see. The cars were going so fast, and they were so loud. I’m probably going to pay more attention to racing now.”

Chat Room Upgraded
Today, I upgraded our chat room from "Advanced" to "Professional". Although you may not be able to benefit from the new features right now, the new chat room will allow us several great features in the near future. I'll discuss those in a later post. Anyway, when I upgraded the package, so did the cost of the chat room. The chat room will now cost $15.95 a month, up from $6.95 of the old chat room. So I was wondering if anyone would be able to help support the chat, if I could get like 3 people to give $5 a month that would be great. I will put your name on the chat room so people know you support it. Thanks. E-mail me with any questions, pip@carly-patterson.net.

Also, I'll be in the chat room on and off today, so stop by and see if I'm there.

Carly Visits Gym (Video)
Yesterday, Carly visited a gym in Tampa Bay. A news reporter was there and reported on Carly and also about the young gymnasts there. I was able to take the video from the TV station web site and convert it to MPEG format so you can download it. It's a pretty good clip.

New Article, New Pictures
I have an article and two new pictures. First, I'll start with the new pictures. They are off of Dominique Moceanu's web site. They are from the 9th annual International Gymnastics Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The pictures aren't the best quality, but better then nothing.

Secondly, a new article was posted today on Tampa Bay sports web site. A pretty good article. I've posted it below but first, the picture from the article, and also I flipped the picture so you can see Carly's face. :)

My version:

A Golden Age

By ERIK ERLENDSSON eerlendsson@tampatrib.com
Published: May 25, 2005

TAMPA - Carly Patterson is living the life of a Gymnastic Idol. One day she hopes to be an American Idol.

The 2004 Olympics women's gymnastics all-around gold medalist possesses more than just a package of tumbles, flips and dismounts. Patterson also packs a pretty potent singing voice and is hoping that one day it will lead to a career in the music industry.

``My dad used to be a singer [and] me and my sister both, we've always been [singing] since we were little,'' Patterson said. ``I'm working on that right now. I've recorded a couple of things, so we'll see how that goes.''

In the meantime, the soon- to-be high school senior from Allen, Texas, is continuing to adapt to her role as America's Golden Girl after becoming the second U.S. gymnast to capture the women's all-around gold, joining Mary Lou Retton, who won gold in Los Angeles in 1984.

After scoring a 9.712 on the floor exercise in her final all- around event at the 2004 Olympics in Athens to clinch the gold, Patterson has been on an almost nonstop schedule. She has made the talk- show circuit, including ``The Tonight Show'' and ``The Late Show with David Letterman.'' The 17-year-old was the subject of an NBC special and adorned the front of a Wheaties box. She landed national endorsement deals with McDonald's, AT&T and Visa.

Another of her endorsements, with Tyson chicken, landed her at Stars Athletics gym in South Tampa on Tuesday. Stars earned the privilege of entertaining Patterson - who was joined by 1996 U.S. Olympic gymnast John Macready - after winning a drawing that included 1,900 other gyms from around the U.S.

Adapting to the whirlwind tour hasn't been the easiest thing for Patterson, who trains in the gym an average of 35 hours a week. Between her training schedule, school and cross-country travel, she finds precious few moments to be at home, let alone relax and catch her breath.

``Some weekends I'm home and I really cherish my time at home now and I've learned to just chill,'' Patterson said. ``Training I'm used to. It's hard, but you get used to it after doing it for so long. Now, I'm always flying and sleeping in other hotel rooms, and you have to wake up early. Then you meet a ton of people and you have to be smiley and happy.

``It's tiring in a different way.''

Even without all the travel, Patterson's training schedule has been slowed somewhat since returning from Greece.

After a recent visit to the doctor she was told she has bulging discs in her back - an injury she felt in Athens that required pain killers to subside - and needs rest to allow them to heal. The training regiment has been reduced to light work with soft landings, not the rough-and-tumble routines that made her a Golden Girl.

``I just try to keep it to a minimum when I'm in the gym, try to take it easy because [the doctor] said, `You don't want to have problems when you are 30, you need to make sure your back is healed properly,' '' she said.

The next major international meet is the World Gymnastics Championships scheduled for Nov. 21-27 in Melbourne, Australia - though Patterson is not sure if she will be able to represent her country because of the injury.

``I haven't really decided yet,'' she said. ``I'm just going to try to see when this [injury] is going to settle down a little bit and see how I feel.''

Patterson's passion for the sport hasn't subsided at all.

``It's what I really love doing,'' said Patterson, who plans to study dental hygiene in college. ``I definitely want to always be involved in the sport. I get to coach my gym's summer camp. I get to coach some of it in the last week of June, so I'm really excited to help out and try to teach people.''

CPnet Member Chats with Carly
While, as I wrote in the last couple of posts. Carly was in Indy last weekend (May 6-7) and in the last post you'll see some pictures from DeVeau's Gymnastics School in Fishers, Indiana. Well, it just so happens one of our forum members was also there last weekend. I've posted his account of what happened and what him and Carly talked about. Wish I could talk to Carly. :)

Eric and Carly (see last post for more pictures from event)

"I met Carly at about 3 pm at DeVeau's gym in Indy. I dropped my little sister off to train and then stayed the afternoon so I could get Carly's autograph for my sister. It turned out we ended up talking for about 5 minutes or so and I ended up getting pictures taken with her-haha. Anyway, she was at Deveau's from 3 to 5 pm, where she then had to leave promptly to go to Indianapolis Int'l Airport where she flew back home to Dallas. Her mom and sister were not with her at the gym. She was so nice to all the little girls there getting her autograph, stopping to take pictures and carry on quick conversations with each.

When I talked to her she seemed super tired. She told me she had to get up at 4:20 that morning to promote for the Visa Championships that are coming to Indy later this summer. She was also clearly taller. I would say at least 5' 4", if not 5' 5". She hasn't gained much weight, if any. I didn't think she looked any bigger at all, just taller. I asked her how her own training was going and how her back was doing. She said she wishes she could have some more time in the gym, but is always traveling places. She did say thought that being gone more did help her back because she wasn't pushing how much she could do during workouts. She talked like she really enjoyed going to the Indianapolis track and opening the festivities. She also mentioned that her life was hectic, but she was still thankful and grateful. The amazing thing about her was how humble she was. She was more interested in knowing about me, than talking about herself. Every person out there who views Carly as a role model has picked an absolutley amazing person to be just that. She is so hard working and down to earth. She is truely an inspiration to all."
